Chichester NH News

July , 2008

Happy Birthday to Grammy Sue Gilmore on July 18 and Mason Pillsbury on July 22!

Chichester Old Home Day is about a month away. Plan to attend this three-day event, which gets bigger and better every year. The Variety Show is scheduled for Thursday, August 14, 7 to 9 p.m. at the school. On Friday, August 15, there will be Cruise Night at Carpenter Park beginning at 6 p.m. There will be live music, and you can also see the kettle of beans being lowered into the bean hole to cook overnight. On Saturday, August 16, is the full schedule of traditional events with the tractor pull beginning at 7 a.m., the parade stepping out at 10, bean hole beans and roast pig at noon, the Attic Treasures Flea Market under the big tent, and other events throughout the day, until it's time for fireworks at 8:45 p.m.

Would you like to have a voice in Chichester Town government? The Capital Improvement Program Committee (CIP) could use some new members. This committee was adopted by a Town Meeting vote to expand participation beyond the Planning Board and assist with the task of monitoring and updating the six year Capital Expenditures Plan. This is a required component under a Growth Management Ordinance and a tremendous budgeting tool for the Selectmen, Department Heads, and the Advisory Budget Committee.

If you are interested in a spot at Carpenter Park on Saturday, August 16, as a vendor or an exhibitor, please contact Jaan Luikmil at 798-4987 as soon as possible. The available space is going fast!

Do you have items for the Attic Treasures Flea Market on Old Home Day? Please Contact Stacy Luikmil at 798-4987. Items can be picked up if necessary.

More cookies, bars, or cupcakes are needed for dessert at the noon meal on Old Home Day, August 16. Contact JoAnn Luikmil at 798-5483 if you are willing to bake. There are a lot of hungry mouths to be fed that day!

If you would like to see your August birthday listed in this column, please contact Hannah West at 798-5783 or e-mail [email protected]. A list of family birthdays can be registered all at one time, if you wish.

Chichester Democrats

The Chichester Democrats will meet on Thursday, July 17, 7:30 p.m. at the home of Representative Sally Kelly - 63 Horse Corner Road. All registered dems are welcome!

We will be discussing our election efforts for our local reps for this November, including creating a presence at both Chichester and Pembroke Old Home Days. Volunteers will be needed, and very much appreciated. Reps Sally Kelly and Frank Davis will both be in attendance, as will Diane Schuett, who is running for office for the first time, from Pembroke. This is a great chance to meet your elected officials and have some input on their campaigns and positions.

Chichester Library

The Chichester Library's summer reading program is off to a good start, but if there are any children in town (8th grade and under) who haven't joined up we are inviting you to do it now. We need 3,000 hours and so far we have 346. If we make our goal singer/storyteller Steve Blunt will eat a live bug here at the library on August 19th.

Our second annual lego contest has begun, so bring in your creations. Just remember whatever you make must somehow be connected to Australia.

Want to help us decorate the library this summer? We are displaying the drawing and descriptions of your favorite books. Come on in and pick up the forms.

The next Summer Reading event will be on Wed. July 23 at 6;00. The library will be filled with Aussie games and activities. This is a great family event. Hope to see you then.

Out Of Your Attic Thrift Shop News

By Ruthi True

Our Latest Project

Recently we sent bags to a few local Police Departments filled with beanie babies. We felt they may be able to use them when they come upon an accident or any situation where they could make a child feel comfortable. Some of the towns to receive these were Alton, Allenstown, Belmont, Barnstead, Bow, Chichester, Gilmanton, Epsom, and Pittsfield, and we have a couple more still to deliver as soon as time allows.

We received a great response from some of the police as they keep small stuffed toys in their trunks. It is one of our simple projects. Our thanks to all the great donators we have.

Also, Judy has been working hard getting ready for her big project in July to benefit anyone who wants to get their Christmas stuff early. We've been saving Christmas items all year to gear up for Judy's sale of the summer!!

We gladly accept any holiday item any time of year as well as Spring, Summer, Winter clothes any time of year as we work on homeless projects all year long. Also, we accept household goods all year long and help folks who have had fires totally free and do lots of other things as well. We do give you a tax slip if you need it for tax purposes. We think it should give you a really good feeling to know you've done something nice to help someone less fortunate.

We have a new program coming to the shop soon. Further details at a later date.

Saint Michael's College Book Award Given To Pembroke Academy Student From Chichester

John T. Nardini, son of Robert and Gloria Nardini of Chichester, NH, and a student at Pembroke Academy in Pembroke, was named the 2008 recipient of the Saint Michael's College Scholarship and Service Book Award. The reward recognizes students who demonstrate a commitment to volunteerism and leadership through community service. Saint Michael's located in the Burlington area of Vermont, was founded on the belief that serving others is part of its Catholic tradition, and through the award seeks to honor those who demonstrate the true spirit of volunteerism.

Award recipients, named at schools throughout the country, are high school juniors who are inductees of the National Honor Society or an equivalent school-sponsored honors organization. They must demonstrate a commitment to service activities in high school or community organizations, taking leadership roles in these activities.

Nardini was presented the book First They Killed My Father: A Daughter Of Cambodia Remembers (HarperCollins 2000) by Loung Ung, a 1993 Saint Michael's College Graduate who has become a widely acclaimed author. In First They Killed My Father Ung gives a powerful autobiographical account, from a child's perspective, of surviving captivity during the genocidal Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. She reveals an indomitable spirit. Ung has written a riviting memoir about a family's survival, and in turn, about the development of Ung's on-going crusade for a landmine free world.
