Letter To The Editor

New Hampshire residents are feeling some relief with one of the best economies since the 60’s.  Citizens need time to enjoy this economic boom and recover from the job killing regulations and anti-business atmosphere created by Obama and Democrats for eight long years.

Unfortunately, on the heels of an improving economy comes an increase in property taxes.  On the Barnstead website the assessors noted that 1/3 of valuations went down, 1/3 remained the same and 1/3 went up.

My tax bill valuation was $16,000 higher than Zillow which is generally 20% higher than actual home values.  I have heard similar stories from others.

A broad-based tax is not the answer as tax revenue would not reach the intended need; education.  When Democrats were in power during the Shaheen and Lynch years, they squandered millions on “feel-good” programs.  Tax dollars collected through an income tax have never reduced property taxes long term wherever it has been instituted; depending who was in power our legislators would spend like drunken sailors.

If Barnstead residents were aware that the reassessments would result in a high valuation, they might have thought twice about constructing a new police station or purchasing of a new pumper truck for the fire department.  Not that those are not desired improvements, but, they also increased the tax rate.

Barnstead has a great school, the road agent maintains our roads well and the police are responsive. The staff at Town Hall is efficient and friendly.   I question the assessors; their logic, accuracy and fairness and will do my own evaluation; hopefully our elected leaders and public servants realized the same sharp increase in property taxes, we shall see.  I am doing an evaluation of my own and will reveal those results in my next letter to this newspaper.

Hey there, Stoneman Dan: I like your idea about getting back to where we used to be. I clearly remember when neighborhood folks took care of each other. Local communities really mattered. I’m only 78˝, so that wasn’t that long ago.

What do you think of intentional communities (communes) for old people where young people help take care of business? That’s what gray Panthers did years ago.
