Letter To The Editor
To The
Editor;
Today I
turn to a county, rather than state, issue on which my opponent for
the NH House seat for Alton, Barnstead, and Gilmanton (Rep. Raymond
Howard, Jr.), and I differ.
In
2017, the county delegation slashed the recommended budget, with
Rep. Howard among those pledging not to raise county taxes, not by
one penny, not for any reason. The delegation cut the recommended
appropriation for the Sheriff’s Department by $135,881, after which
Sheriff Moyer indicated that his department would not be able to
continue performing per usual under the reduced amount.
Rep.
Howard had the perfect solution to the problem. Pointing out that
dispatch is not a statutorily mandated duty of the Sheriff, he
recommended cutting dispatching to save money, a measure that would
save the Sheriff’s Department approximately $500,000.
The
flaw here? If the Sheriff’s Office stops dispatching for the towns,
the towns have to do it themselves. The estimated cost of the
Howard solution to the 3 towns in Rep. Howard’s district, all of
which receive 24/7 dispatch through the Sheriff’s Department, is
approximately $425,000 per town per year, plus an additional $500,00
for initial set-up. Each of those towns would pay close to $1
million extra the first year, and $425,000 extra each year after.
Fortunately Rep. Howard’s proposal fell flat, with the clear
realization that the proposal was penny-wise, pound-foolish, saving
$500,000 for the county at a cost of millions to the towns.
Attempts to save the taxpayers a few dollars in the short run can be
extremely costly to those same taxpayers in the long run. My
palm card pledge to look for “long term solutions, not quick fixes”
referred to exactly this type of situation. If elected, I will give
more thought to any solution I propose.

World
Dock Diving Championships
Aiden,
a one year old Labrador Retriever, from Barnstead, received an
invite to the World’s Dock Diving Championship, being held in
Knoxville, TN October 8th-13th. This event is invite-only and the
dogs must qualify to a certain level to receive an invitation. His
owner and trainer, as well as owner of Inspire K-9’s Training Center
in Alton, NH, Megan Arey says, “He has been in training for the past
two years in many events, just trying to find the right dog sport
for him. We have trained and had many qualifying scores and wins in
agility, rally obedience, and hunting retriever to include waterfowl
and upland hunting”. Megan Arey continued by saying, “While he loves
and excels in training, competing, and working for me, there is
something about the dock and chasing the bumper he lives for!”
Aiden jumped at the world qualifying event at the Hopkinton State
Fair and jumped 22 feet putting him in a shot to qualify for the
World’s competition. Megan stated, “in order to get an invite, the
dog has to fall in the top 4 in their division for the weekend,
which Aiden clearly did, earning him a Master Jumpers title and an
invite to compete at the World’s Competition in the Master
division.”
Dock
diving is a fun sport that is gaining in popularity. It is a sport
that tests a dog’s physically ability and impulse control to listen
to their owner’s commands while on the dock. Dogs compete in jumping
for the longest distance or longest height into a body of water. The
dock measures 40’ long and the dog can jump from anywhere on that
dock. The distance the dog is judged on is from the end of the dock
to where that base of the tail breaks the water’s surface. Handlers
have 90 seconds to get their dog into the water. There will be live
stream of Megan and Aiden competing on Inspire K-9’s Training Center
facebook page for the first qualifying round on Wednesday, October
9th.
Megan
is a certified dog trainer through the Certification Council for
Professional Dog Trainers. She hopes to heighten visibility of the
many sporting opportunities for dogs and their families in Alton,
New Durham, Gilmanton, Barnstead and other surrounding towns. Her
mission is to showcase to many people that anyone can accomplish
many goals with their dogs, while having fun! Megan is also a leader
of the 4-H Dog Club, Paws and Effect for children of Alton, New
Durham and Barnstead. Spreading awareness about dog sports to the
younger generation is something she loves to do and be involved in.
