Cow Pie Bingo Winner Announced by Belknap House
Don House, VP Belknap House, presents the winning
check to Jen Mika.
The two cows, Maverick and Goose, in the pasture at Moulton Farm on
the day of the event.
Belknap
House, in conjunction with Moulton Farm and Maxfield Real Estate
announces that Ticket 103 was the winning ticket at the Cow Pie
Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, September 22nd. On that day, two
cows, Maverick and Goose were led onto the gridded pasture at
Moulton Farm. The cows belong to Wes and Brandy Thomas of
Meredith, NH. Wes and Brandy volunteered their time and cows
to support this event and Belknap House expressed their gratitude
for their assistance.
The
gridded pasture contained two hundred twenty-five 4-foot by 4-foot
squares. Each ticket was mapped to one of these unique
squares. Maverick and Goose wandered the pasture eating the
grass while the crowd watched and waited. At about 1:42pm,
Goose selected the square in row 2 and column 14 of the grid.
Three independent judges then verified the row and column number
containing the cow pie. The ticket number and owner associated
with this square was identified.
The
winning ticket belonged to Jen Mika. She was notified by
Belknap House on the same day and was elated to hear the news.
She received $825 which represented 25% of the $3300 in ticket
sales. Belknap House received $2475 from this event to support
its mission of providing a safe shelter for homeless families with
children from mid-October to mid-May. The shelter serves the ten
towns and one city in Belknap County. From Memorial Day
weekend through Columbus Day weekend Belknap House is open as a
vacation hostel to raise funds for its homeless shelter mission.
Belknap
House thanks all our sponsors for this event. Moulton farmed
provided the pasture and helped market the event. Maxfield
Real Estate and the Tondel Family were two other sponsors of
the event. Belknap House appreciates all the local residents
that purchased tickets for this event.
Belknap
House, located at 200 Court St. in Laconia re-opens as a homeless
shelter on October 15. Volunteers are always needed to help
run the shelter, maintain the building and grounds, and help with
fund-raising activities. Those interested in volunteering
should contact Belknap House (608-527-8097) or sign-up on our
website at belknaphouse.org.

Read Like a Girl
You
Read Like a Girl is a book club focusing on women’s stories. This
club will meet at the library on the fourth Wednesday of each month
at 6pm. Copies of this month’s book, The Heretic’s Daughter by
Kathleen Kent, are available at the library. The next meeting will
take place on October 24th.

Book Club
The
Adult Book Club meets the first Wednesday of each month at 7pm here
at the library. Join us for some great literature and stimulating
conversation. Copies of the current book, The Air We Breathe by
Andrea Barrett, are available at the library. The next meeting is
scheduled for November 7th.

To the
Editor:
The
2018 election is the time to vote for positive change in the state
legislature by voting for candidates who have fresh ideas and are
committed to addressing the major issues – including affordable
healthcare and prescription drugs, public school funding, high
property taxes and preservation of our environment – with critical
thinking based on research and facts.
We need
change and representatives who will face the issues with compassion
and an open mind, beginning at the state level, to move forward.
In
conversations with Michelle Carter, candidate for state
representative in Belknap County District 5, Alton and Gilmanton, I
know she has the dedication and experience in science and the
environment, in education and in navigating the complex world of
health care and medical insurance to work toward finding solutions.
She is an advocate of fiscal responsibility while maintaining and
initiating needed programs to benefit our communities.
She
will listen to all sides and base her decisions on what is best for
the people in her district, not on the tight constraints of a “party
line” to maintain the status quo. When you vote, please
consider what is important to you and your family and choose the
candidate who represents your values – not just your habitual
choice.
Voting
is our means to express our opinion on how our government should
move forward. Please vote on Tuesday, November 6. Your
vote does count and can make a positive difference!

Pumpkin And Pine Church Fair
Saturday, November 3 From 9-2
Our
annual church fair will feature items from Ghana, Africa - all
handmade from their gorgeous handwoven batik fabric: jewelry, all
sizes of purses and bags and well as clothing will be displayed.
Start
the morning off with homemade items from our Cafe which will have
breakfast and lunch items for sale throughout the day to be enjoyed
onsite or taken home.
Other
things you will find at the fair: Christmas items, jewelry,
leather purses, collectibles, kitchen items, raffle baskets, a Door
Prize, Hand Made in NH items, Special Extra Sharp Cheddar Cabot Farm
cheese, baked goods, PIES and one of a kind items.
The
Silent Auction will have 2 pieces of Vintage Church Furniture, a
beautiful 9 x 12 Oriental rug, paintings by local artists, beautiful
new leather boots (size 5.5), and gift cards for local restaurants
and businesses.
Get
your Christmas shopping done in one fun day while supporting the
near and far ministries of The Congregational Church of North
Barnsead. The church is located at 504 North Barnstead
Road, approximately 2 miles from Route 28.

Upcoming NH District 8 Legislative Election
NH
Legislative District 8 is composed of the Towns of Alton, Barnstead,
and Gilmanton. How you vote on November 6th will determine the
future of all the residents of these towns. It is extremely
important that you become an educated voter and make the right
choice.
Are you
disgusted with the way NH pays for school funding, throwing the
burden on property owners, and landlords, who then pass the tax to
their tenants? Where does your candidate stand on issues such
as support for medical insurance for all; restrictions on the use of
automatic weapons, and “Bump Stocks”; legalization of cannabis;
renewable energy; the Greenhouse Gas Initiative; and term limits for
all?
My
friend, Ruth Larson, is challenging Raymond Howard, Jr. for the
District 8 seat. Ruth has a BA Degree from Antioch, and, a
Juris Doctor Degree from Rutgers University School of Law. She
is a caring person who believes that government exists for the
benefit of the people, and not “Big Business”. She is an
accomplished researcher, and will make sure that she is fully
knowledgeable before voting on any proposed legislation. She
listens to all points of view and makes her decisions based on
facts, not “Party Loyalty”. She is a free and independent
thinker.

Carlene
“Carla” Lillian (MacLeod) Booker
Carlene
“Carla” Lillian (MacLeod) Booker, 57 of Center Barnstead, NH passed
away unexpectedly on October 9, 2018.
Carla
was born in Woburn, MA and was the daughter of Dorothy (Carpenter)
and the late Lawrence “Dimpy” MacLeod. Carla was a graduate of
Woburn High School, class of 1979. It was there that she met
her high school sweetheart Charles Booker. They were married
in 1981 and would have celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary
this month. They built a home in Center Barnstead, NH in 1988
where they raised their family. Carla was most proud of her
children, Eric Booker and Nicole Leonard. She was a loving
mother-in-law to Sarah-Beth Booker and Jason Leonard.
Carla
so enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren. She loved doing
crafts with her grandson Jayden and loved baking with her
granddaughters, Lexie and Chloe. Carla was thrilled with the
birth of her newest granddaughter, Paige, born on September 25th.
Carla
loved her gardens and would spend hours planting and tending to
them. She loved to play dice with her husband, they played almost
every night. Carla also enjoyed her time with Charlie at their
camper in Chichester, NH. They spent the summers there where
many a night they would play cards and cornhole with their friends
Maxine and Tom Pratte. During the cold winter months Jenga was
their game of choice.
Carla
was employed at Millican Nurseries in Chichester, NH for close to 21
years. She was a most valued employee and will be terribly
missed. Her kindness and loving personality made her one of a
kind.
Carla
was the loving mother of Eric Booker and his wife Sarah-Beth and
Nicole Leonard and her husband Jason all of Center Barnstead, NH;
devoted Grandmother of Jayden and Lexie Booker and Chloe and Paige
Leonard; dear sister of Arlene Thibeault, her husband Fred, Kathleen
Lundgren, her husband Timmy, Maureen Webster, her husband Billy,
Laurene Gonsalves, her husband Robbie, Darlene “Dolly” Murray, her
husband Brian and Lawrence “Larry” MacLeod, his wife Dianne all of
Woburn; dear sister-in-law to Peggy Brown of Woburn, Joan McPartlin
and her husband Jim of Woburn, Carol Lecesse and her husband Paul of
Groveland, Robert Booker and his wife Patty of Franklin and Charlene
Preston and her husband Al of Petersham; also survived by her aunt
Joyce Carpenter, uncle Kenny Carpenter and several nieces, nephews
and cousins.

Rhonda
J. (Hanson)Bender
Rhonda
Jean (Hanson) Bender, age 53, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, passed away
during the night of September 20-21, 2018 in Boscawen, New
Hampshire.
She was
born in Concord NH, daughter of the late Jean M. Hanson of
Pittsfield and Mr. & Mrs. Ronald D. Hanson of Barnstead
She
attended schools in Pittsfield, NH and had recently been pursuing
classes at Southern NH University. It was a dream of hers to
one day be able to counsel those who experienced similar struggles
and challenges as she had. She was determined to pass with high
grades, and she was.
Rhonda
loved to cook, especially Thanksgiving dinners that she’d recently
prepared and enjoyed with her friends. She liked going to flea
markets seeking craft supplies for the beautiful Christmas baskets
that she loved to make. She enjoyed fishing and loved to be
outside. She was a free spirit in some respects and had no fear of
just picking up and travelling to someplace she wanted to be. Rhonda
had overcome many hardships and wanted her friends and family to
know that she was in a good place. She tried to be positive about
what was next in her life. If her friends needed someone to talk to,
she would be there, even in the midst of dealing with her own
problems. She had a very caring, compassionate heart and will
leave a lasting mark on all who had the pleasure to know her.
In
addition to her parents, Rhonda is survived by her son, Michael A.
Bender of Indiana; brothers, Richard Hanson of Tennessee and David
Hanson of Barnstead; sister, Cathy Hanson Everett; niece, Payton;
and nephews, Rashaun and Trey, all of Barnstead; and aunts, uncles,
cousins, and close friends that she thought of as family. She was
also a proud mom to her dog Bella and her bird Max.
Visiting Hours and a public funeral will not be held.
A
graveside service will be held in the spring where her cremated
remains with be interred with other family members at Floral Park
Cemetery in Pittsfield.
