Bucky
The Boar Submitted By Carole Soule
The piglet was stuck under
a fallen tree branch squealing to be released. Bucky, our seven
hundred pound boar, was doing his best to lift the branch off the
unhappy piglet but with only his snout to work with was not having
success. For the past month, Bucky has been the leader of a bunch of
ten-week old piglets who adore him. This is unusual because at best
boars ignore piglets, at worst they kill and sometimes eat them.
Bucky is a gentle boar who takes a real interest in these fourteen
piglets who are his offspring.
We had weaned the fourteen piglets
several weeks earlier and kept them separate from the bigger pigs.
That worked until one day I forgot to latch the piglet’s pen door.
All fourteen piglets, about fifteen pounds each, escaped through the
open door. I found them hanging out with Bucky, their dad. Not only
were all the piglets alive but Bucky seemed to like their crazy
antics and their frequent nuzzle snuzzles. I could see he wasn’t
going to kill them and since they seemed to like his company, I let
them stay together during the day.
Even though I let the piglets
out during the day to socialize with Bucky and four older pigs I
make sure they are secure in their pen at night. Until a piglet is
thirty pounds or so, they are vulnerable to predator attacks.
Coyotes and even owls would love a piglet meal but once the piglets
are thirty pounds they seem to be safe from predator attacks.
I
don’t know how long Bucky had been working to free the piglet under
the fallen tree branch but once Bruce, my husband, freed the piglet,
Bucky walked away happy for the help. For now, the piglets have an
ever watchful dad to keep them in line and to try to save them from
fallen branches. They may not know how lucky they are but these
little piglets have a guardian boar to watch over them.

“I
eat, sleep and breathe jewelry,” Sarah Huggins of Gems First says,
but not in the way most women do, “I dream jewelry design.”
Sarah
Huggins Puts Gems First! By Meggin Dail
Sarah Huggins sees
herself as sort of a “rock nerd.” We’re not talking rock music but
actual rocks. Well, that’s how it started anyway, her interest in
gemstones. As a kid she loved discovering quartz in her own backyard
in Barnstead, NH. As an adult she has gained the title of Gemologist
and, more recently, Certified Insurance Appraiser ™ in jewelry.
Gems First, LLC, 88 North Main Street in Concord is an oasis from
the busy downtown. It’s one flight up and at the top of the stairs
and an airy showroom with cases of beautiful jewelry as well as
Sarah herself, a very easy to talk to, knowledgeable Gemologist who
not only knows her stones but really wants to help customers
understand their own gems.
Sarah grew up on a dirt road in
Barnstead, NH and still lives in Barnstead today. As a child she was
fascinated by quartz and would spend hours looking at them under a
microscope. That passion stayed with her and when she grew up, found
a job working for Mark Knipe Goldsmith in Concord, who she credits
with taking a chance on her, staying there for 11 years while she
gained more schooling and grew her passion for gems. When Mark Knipe
closed its doors, Sarah saw it as an opportunity for her to pursue a
dream of owning her own shop and thus Gems First, LLC became a
reality.
Gems First is not your typical jewelry store, just as
Sarah is not your typical Gemologist. She wants to help you
celebrate those gems that may be hiding in your jewelry box, be they
family heirlooms or heirlooms to be… you see, Sarah also creates
jewelry. Sarah wants to make you one-of-a-kind jewelry. She can tell
you what it is you have and create something for you that you’ll
want to wear every day. “Someone will have a really funky ring
but it has diamonds in it and I can take those diamonds out and make
you a piece that you’re going to love, using the stones and/or the
gold.” She wants you to know what your jewelry should be insured for
whether you come in to have something appraised or need her to come
to you. That’s right, she makes house calls. She’s that passionate
about what she does and wants you to appreciate your gems as much as
she does. “I can absolutely melt some gold from Grandma’s wedding
ring and give you a piece you can wear close to your heart. What I’m
doing is truly making one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry.”
“You see
anyone can give you an appraisal sheet saying ‘one gold ring, fifty
bucks’ but they may not have been to school to properly do
that.” Sarah tells me. “There are no regulations. What you want is a
‘Certified Gemologist with training in appraisals.’ That way at
least you know you have a ‘mechanic working on your car,’” she says
with a smile.
Sarah had just returned from Louisville Kentucky
where she underwent classes and testing to not only become a
Certified Insurance Appraiser of Jewelry, but an Insurance
underwriter, spending a lot of time really learning the ins and outs
of not just her trade but the insurance industry as well. She is
able to work alongside your insurance agent to appraise your gems,
even at your agent’s office. “I want to be able to do appraisals for
people even if they can’t get out and about.” In other words, she’s
got your back.
Most popular with Gems First is designing wedding
bands and engagement rings. If you’re wondering about pricing, see
Sarah as the time to create it and the cost can run the gamut
depending on your materials.
You may have noticed Sarah’s company
Gems First advertised in The Suncook Sun on the front page. Go pay
her a visit. She’s a beautiful person with a lot of energy, deep
knowledge and intuition and abundant creative juices to help you
with your creations. She cares about your intentions with your
heirlooms; “If they’re a gardener, I don’t want to necessarily
create a delicate ring for them to move rocks and pull weeds, I want
to make something they can wear all the time that will last. “
Sarah is a Graduate Gemologist of the Gemological Institute of
America, Certified Insurance Appraiser ™ of Jewelry Insurance
Appraisal Institute with training from the American Gem Society and
The Jewelers Education Foundation.
