Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

Since our Governor, Chris Sununu, has made known that he supports the proposed Republican Trump Care bill, which he has not even seen, he is setting himself up to be a One Term Governor.

He was too busy currying favor in Washington to fight for full-day kindergarten that he was so adamant about in his version of the budget.  He talks about the opioid crises that is ravaging New Hampshire without giving one thought as to how the new and improved Trump Care Bill will gut the Medicaid System, thereby throwing the addicted, the mentally afflicted, and the most vulnerable citizens in the State of New Hampshire under the “Trump Care Bus.”

His loyalties lie with the Republican Party, and his wealthy supporters. They have no idea what living in poverty and having to declare bankruptcy due to overwhelming medical expenses is like, and I doubt that they even care.

Let us get together and support a progressive Democrat, like Steve Marchand, at the polls in November 2018.  He has proven leadership credentials as the former Mayor of Portsmouth, and has placed emphasis on working for the good of the citizenry.

Mr. Sununu has barely been in the job for 6 months and he has already proven to be ineffective. New Hampshire’s citizens deserve so much better than someone who caters to the wealthy and gives lip service to the underprivileged.

Barnstead Parks and Recreation Summer Concert Series

Barnstead Daddios.jpg

Please join Barnstead Parks and Recreation in welcoming the Rockin’ Daddios to the summer concert stage on Saturday, July 1.

This fun, four-man acappella group performs some of the best-loved songs from the 40s, 50s and 60s in a doo-wop style.  The Rockin’ Daddios will share stories about the groups that performed the songs, as well as period trivia, commercial jingles, and TV theme songs.  The music of this bygone era has the power to conjure up many special memories and bring the listener back to a more innocent time.  You’ll hear songs like “Book of Love”, “Blue Moon”, “Teenager in Love” and “Little Star” to name a few. The songs are family friendly and guaranteed to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face.

Inspired from vastly popular “Men’s Medley” originally featured in Irene Descehenes’ “Moments to Remember I and II” 50’s reviews, the Rockin’ Daddios consist of Lakes Region residents Jim Rogato, Bo Guyer and Angelo Gentile, who have been performing together in various shows and reviews for well over 10 years. Collectively, their community theater experience spans six decades! And now featuring the vocals and guitar magic of Drew Seneca. So sit back, relax and enjoy the Rockin’ Daddios. Their music will make you smile.

This free show starts at 6:00 pm at the Barnstead Parade Grounds. The Barnstead Congregational Church will be on hand offering concessions.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket, and a friend or two. As always, smoking and alcohol are prohibited on the grounds.

See you at the show!

Democrat Meeting: Politics and Art

Politics and art will converge at the Tri-Town Democrats of Barnstead, Gilmanton, and Alton meeting on Monday, July 10th at the 1793 Temperance Tavern Inn in Gilmanton. The 18th century colonial features an eclectic gallery where Democrats will gather to eat, talk politics, mingle, and browse the array of works of fine art on paper.  Our special guest will be Zandra Rice Hawkins from Granite State Progress, a progressive advocacy organization that provides a strong voice in advancing progressive solutions to critical issues of state and local concern. Granite State Progress’ State House Accountability presentation provides resources to increase public awareness and civic participation to make sure elected officials are voting in the best interest of their constituents. The presentation will be followed by action items and community organizing.

Come for socializing any time between 6:15 pm and 6:45 pm. The meeting runs from 6:45 pm to 8:00pm. The Temperance Tavern is located at 506 Province Road (Rt. 107) in Gilmanton. Parking is available across the street at or behind the Gilmanton Town Offices or along Currier Hill Road. For more information on the Temperance Tavern, please visit temperancetavern.com.

The meeting is open to any and all residents of Barnstead, Alton, and Gilmanton who consider themselves moderate, liberal, or progressive Democrats or like-minded Independents. Refreshments to share are encouraged but not required. For more information, please contact Heather Carter at [email protected] or visit the “Barnstead, Alton, and Gilmanton Democrats” Facebook page.

CHaD Benefit Dinner

Barnstead CHaD baseball logo.jpg

Each year, members of New Hampshire’s firefighting and police communities raise funds for the Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth-Hitchcock (CHaD) by participating in the Battle of the Badges.  Come join us at a benefit dinner on Saturday, July 15, at the Barnstead Parade Fire Station to help raise funds for Team Fire for this year’s Battle of the Badges Baseball Classic.  A delicious all-you-can-eat buffet will be served from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. to help raise funds for this worthy cause.  The cost is your generous donation.  Menu will feature grilled hot dogs and buns with all the fixings and side dishes you can imagine, along with a scrumptious dessert.

Barnstead Fire-Rescue’s own Captain Brian Cottrell is a member of this year’s Team Fire and he is sponsoring this benefit dinner to raise funds for the Team. Take-out dinner containers will also be available if you want to take your dinner down to Barnstead Parade Grounds to hear Chris Bonoli and The Friends of Barnstead’s performance as part of the Summer Concert Series.

The Battle of the Badges Baseball Classic will be played at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11 at Manchester’s Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.  An exciting fireworks display will be presented following the game.  Tickets are $10.00 (children under age 10 are free) and will be available at the benefit dinner on July 15.  Every dollar raised will help fund programs at CHaD that wouldn’t exist without the generosity of the players, sponsors and fans.  Please join us for this benefit dinner to help raise funds for this very important cause.
