WWII
Presentation
On Friday,
October 23rd at the Barnstead Town Hall Calvin Knickerbocker will be
presenting “Motivating the WWII Home Front via Magazine and Radio
Advertising” at 7pm. Magazine ads and radio commercials aimed at the
home front were used extensively during WWII and Calvin will be using
over 50 period magazine ads and radio commercials to illustrate the
concerted effort by which the US government fostered these aims. Never
before or since has the US used the media so effectively to support a
wartime effort. This presentation is sponsored by the Oscar Foss
Memorial Library and the Barnstead Historical Society, with funding
provided by the NH Humanities Council.

Barnstead’s Strong Seniors
Staying fit
was relatively easy when we were young, but now takes it daily
discipline. Gardening and yard work are good exercise but staying
strong and flexible is a year-round commitment. Have you considered
chair yoga, tai chi or an exercise class? The Senior Centers in
Pittsfield and Alton have some great options. Yoga is also offered by
other community groups such as Alton Parks & Recreation and Sage
Wellness Center and Journey to Peace in Pittsfield.
The Senior
Centers have the following classes each week and you may join anytime:
Monday
• Chair
Yoga in Pittsfield with Tom Sherman. The class meets between 10:45 and
11:30 am with a nominal donation.
• Chair
Yoga in Alton with Frances Nash. The class meets between 1:15 pm and
2pm with a nominal donation.
Tuesday and
Thursday
• Bone
Builders in Pittsfield with Carol Schiferle, the center manager, from 9
to 10am. This class also has a strong following and participants may
use the ankle or hand weighs provided. There is no fee.
Wednesday
• Tai Chi
with Marcia Wyman is offered in Alton from 9 to 10 am. This
class is very relaxing and helps with core strength and balance. You
may pay by the class or by the month.
There is an
8-week autumn class in Alton on managing falls. The class is full but
you may call the Alton Senior Center for wait list or information on
future classes. Roney Delgadillo is the Alton Center manager and the
number is 875-7102. Call Carol Schiferle in Pittsfield at 435-8482 for
more information about their classes and services.
