Summer Reading Programs End At Barnstead Library

The 2014 Summer Reading Programs at Oscar Foss Memorial Library were a HUGE success! This year we had 126 children and teens register for the programs, with 78 of those individuals completing the programs and a total of 998 books read! We started our programs with an exciting Kick-Off event with “Mad Science” in June and the children continued to have a great time doing science experiments during our weekly activities. Our weekly Summertime Songs & Stories and Arts & Crafts activities were also well attended and our Toddler Time continued throughout the summer as well. Children of all ages had a great time listening to stories, singing and creating many different projects relating to our “Fizz, Boom, Read” theme. The teens in our “Spark a Reaction” program also enjoyed getting together for fun activities. Some of which included washable tattoos, games and an inspiring visit with author Adi Rule! Everyone got an opportunity to hear about her experiences and ask her questions. As we have many writers in our group, this was extremely helpful and insightful. We would all like to thank Adi for her time and honest discussion.

To end our “Spark a Reaction” teen program this year we celebrated with a “Pizza & Movie Party”! The teens enjoyed a delicious meal of pizzas, popcorn & cookies while watching the movie “Divergent”.  They also received their awards, certificates, & surprises, and got to choose their free books. The “Fizz, Boom, Read” group celebrated with an “Ice Cream & Movie Party!” They got to make an ice cream sundae and eat popcorn while they watched “The Muppets Most Wanted”. They also received their awards, certificates, & surprises, and got to choose their free books. We also chose the raffle winners for all our wonderful prizes that were donated by NH businesses. If you were unable to attend the celebrations, please stop by the library to pick up your child’s packets by September 15th. We are also happy to announce that the 50 participants in our Adult Summer Reading Program read a total of 162 books this summer! Congratulations to all for doing such a fantastic job reading this summer.

The library would like to thank all of our generous sponsors for helping to make our 2014 Summer Reading Programs such a success. The Jack & Dorothy Bryne Foundation, CHILIS, Cogswell Benevolent Trust, the NH State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Institute of Museum & Library Services and the NH State Library for the grant that assisted with our Kick-Off event. Canobie Lake Park, NH Fisher Cats Foundation, Monarchs Care Foundation, Water Country, Gunstock, Jay’s Bayside, Space Center, Wal-Mart, Ogunquit Playhouse, McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center, Funspot, Boston Red Sox, Mad Science, Books a Million, and Trina Blackwood for all of our wonderful raffle prizes. Pizza Hut, in Concord and Sissy’s Sweets & Ice Cream in Barnstead for all the certificates in the children’s ending packets. We would also like to thank all of our teens and adult volunteers who helped with our weekly activities. Thank you everyone for a great summer, keep reading and we’ll see you at the library!

Invitation To Join Scouts In Barnstead

 Barnstead Scouts.jpg

Barnstead boys ages 6 through 18 are invited to join the Cub or Boy Scouts in Barnstead for some exciting adventures.  Last year we went camping (spring, summer and winter), went climbing at Vertical Dreams , all of us went to summer camp for a week, completed a number of hikes and received a lot of award badges for these and many more activities.  This year we will camp more, hike more and plan some other great activities.  It is easy to join -- call Doris Williams at 603-435-7054 or email Mrs. Williams at [email protected].  If this does not work for you just show up at the meetings at the Barnstead Elementary School Wednesday evening.

Letter To The Editor

Dear Editor,

This letter is to support one of the candidates for the Alton, Barnstead and Gilmanton seat. His name is Raymond Howard.

Ray is a born and bred native of New Hampshire. He has been a contractor, and self-employed, for over 34 years. Hard work and frugality are nothing new to this guy. He knows exactly what it takes to pay bills, including taxes. He brings that Granite State common sense with him to the Alton Planning Board, where he regularly applies it in defense of the local taxpayer. As a contractor, he has a keen eye for the details in everything.

For over seventeen years, Ray has been active in the Boy Scouts. This great organization offers valuable contributions for molding young men’s characters, and Ray has been a part of that.

If you want a candidate that is fiscally responsible, a defender of the U.S. and N.H. Constitutions, and a supporter of local control, may I offer to you the candidacy of Raymond Howard.

I believe he is the best choice to represent us in Concord.

Don Walker

Barnstead
