A special
activity is scheduled at the Pittsfield Community Center on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday, March 28, 30, and April 1st. Folks from
Plymouth State University will be meeting with seniors to discuss
“Reliability Of Balance Testing In Older Adults”. This is by
appointment only. You may call the Center at 435-8482 for more
information and to make an appointment.
On Tuesday, March 29th, at
11:00 am, a blood pressure check will be provided by Concord Regional
VNA. During lunch, there will be a presentation entitled “Keeping
Your Heart Healthy.”

Barnstead Cub Scout Pack 43 will be hosting a Chili and Chowder Cook Off
at the Barnstead Elementary School on March 26th from 10:30-2:30. The
cost is $5 to enter your chili or chowder. We are also having a judging

George H. Green
IV, age 51, a well known member of the Barnstead NH and Tewksbury MA
community, died Thursday evening, March 10, at the Spaulding
Rehabilitation Hospital in Cambridge, after a courageous two year battle
with cancer. A celebration benefit for George will be on April 2nd at TJ
Callahan’s in Tewksbury Ma, off Route 38, starting at 5pm until closing.

Dear Editor:
I attended my first Belknap County budget
meeting on 3/14/11. I thought that this would be a snap; all republicans
with a clear mandate on November 2nd. Boy, was I surprised!
The Chair
allowed the public to make comments before closing the meeting and doing
business. I was surprised by the size of the crowd and was told that it
was larger than normal. As each resident spoke, it was clear that they
wanted spending cut. Some members of the committee were not happy to
hear from the folks. Some talked among themselves and laughed at some of
the speakers. I thought that was very disrespectful.
It looked to me
like the committee was evenly split between conservative and liberal
republicans. The conservatives tried to cut 7% from the budget. I
thought that this was a modest amount. Several votes took place and they
ended up in a tie each time. We were told by the Chair that a tie does
not pass. The conservatives tried to talk about how they promised the
voters that they would cut spending. Several of them tried to show where
money could be cut without cutting essential services. The liberal
republicans would not support any cuts.
After a 15 minute recess, one
of the liberal republicans (I don’t know his name) made a motion to cut
$200,000 dollars from a $32 million dollar budget. A vote was taken and
it passed. Thus ended any real attempt to bring sanity to the budget and
relief to the over burdened taxpayers of Belknap County.
Isn’t it
sad that the taxpayers of Belknap County don’t have better
representation. Maybe we should remember that in the 2012 elections.

Cleaning For Meals On Wheels
Do you have a closet full of clothes you
don’t wear? Do you have children or grandchildren that are
outgrowing their clothes at rapid speed? Now that spring is close
to being sprung, do you have any winter coats with which to part?
Well, we need you!
The Alton Senior Center and all senior
centers of Elder Services of Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack
Counties, Inc. are partnering with Planet Aid to collect clean donated
clothing, outerwear and shoes/boots, bedding, curtains, belts, handbags
and ties for the entire month of April to benefit the Meals on Wheels
Program. Planet Aid will give 5¢ per pound of items collected.
All the monies raised through these donations will be donated by Planet
Aid to the Elder Services’ Meals on Wheels Program.
Planet Aid
is a non-profit organization that recycles clothing. It is an
organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in developing
countries and lends support to communities in the region it serves in
the U.S. The goals of Planet Aid are to support communities’
efforts to reduce waste in local landfills, to teach the importance of
recycling and making fundraising easy.
Senior hunger is a critical
issue on the rise in our country. According to the Meals on Wheels
Association of America (MOWAA), there are reportedly over 5 million
seniors who experience some form of food insecurity nationally.
With these alarming statistics in mind, Elder Services is proud to have
served 970 Meals on Wheels clients with 221,978 meals from July 1, 2009
– June 30, 2010. With support from Planet Aid and you, Elder
Services can continue to be sure no older adult goes hungry in the 38
towns served.
A large yellow Planet Aid box is on the grounds of the
Alton Senior Center waiting to be stuffed with these items. Please
call Amy at the Alton Senior Center at 875-7102 to make arrangements for
delivering your donated goods.

Steve
Holmes Speaking At CBCC
Steve Holmes will be speaking at the Center
Barnstead Christian Church this Sunday, March 27th during the 10:00 am
morning service.
Steve graduated from New Brunswick Bible
Institute in 1974, and went on to receive a Bachelor of Theology from
Trinity College and Seminary in Newburg, Indiana. He and his wife,
Debra, were married in 1974 and spent 18 years serving with Village
Missions and about 7 years in rural churches outside of Village
Missions. They served churches in New York state, Connecticut,
Maine and New Hampshire. They have two daughters and two grandsons
who they are now raising in Alton, NH, where they own a home repair and
remodeling business.
Come this Sunday and hear what Steve has
to share with us from God’s Word. Remember, there will also be a
free Men’s Breakfast this Saturday, March 26th at 7:30 am at the church.

Resident To Hold Book Signing
Several years ago Nolan and Naomi Avery
were on their way to Montana to visit Naomi’s brother and his wife.
They were camping in Ontario. As they were sitting by a campfire,
Nolan looked and saw a field mouse sitting on the bumper of their
pick-up camper.
The door of their camper was wide open. Naomi
was afraid the mouse would get in the camper. She ran and slammed
the door shut; poor little mouse thought she was after him and he
disappeared between the camper and the pick-up side into the wheel well.
The Averys thought they would never see the mouse again, but every night
when they camped, he sat on the bumper. He went thousands of miles
with them.
Naomi wrote a story about the mouse and it has been
published. She will be signing her book “Bumper” on Saturday,
March 26th, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Barnstead Country Store.
