Letter
“Shame On You”

I am a WWII Soldier buried in peace at a Barnstead, NH, Cemetery. But Not So.
I never got to kiss mommy and daddy good bye or hug my brothers and sisters.
I was K.I.A. (killed in action) for your freedom.
I also share a space in the above cemetery. I lived a good twenty years after WWII, but my war wounds took their toll and I passed away because of them.
My brothers above share a war story I often reminiscent about.
I am 89 years old, must I share their same faiths?
My name is James Covalucci, recipient of the Purple Heart and Finance Officer of American Legion Post 42 here in Barnstead, NH.
Recently I had to purchase 3 bronze WWII grave markers.
“Shame On You” stole the others.

Must we bury all our veterans of all wars with their grave markers in their caskets because of “Shame On You.” Then they will become unknown soldiers.

Commander Gregory Gushaw
“My Nephew, My Hero”
Lovingly Submitted By His Aunt Louise Vick
Of Center Barnstead, NH
May 21, 1942 - July 18, 2010

Commander Gregory Vance Gushaw died Sunday, July 18, from a fatal accident while volunteering aboard the Star of India sailing ship in San Diego. He was born May 21, 1942 in the Panama Canal Zone to James and Evangeline Gushaw formerly of Worcester, Mass.

He grew up in Missouri and attended Webster Groves High School in St. Louis where he was on the swim team and played violin in the school orchestra. After graduation in 1959, Greg attended Harvard University. He earned a degree in Applied Physics. He became interested in military service during his membership in the ROTC program at Harvard.

After graduation in 1963, Greg chose a career with the Navy, served as an Engineering Officer, and chose to specialize in intelligence. He also attended the Naval War College, Newport, RI, in 1974. Greg continued his education at American University in 1977, earning a master’s degree in Technology Management. While living in the Washington, D.C., area, he was a Joint Chiefs of Staff Briefer at the Pentagon.

He served with pride aboard USS Nicholas, USS Mt. Whitney, and the aircraft carrier USS Ranger.

Commander Gushaw was a highly decorated Intelligence Officer who also served as a United States Military Attache in Stockholm, Sweden, from 1978-1981. One of his many honors included receiving the Royal Order of the Polar Star Medal. On returning from Sweden, he belonged to the Cruiser Destroyer Group Three Staff. Commander Gushaw was known for his patriotism, leadership, diplomacy, public speaking, and organizational ability.

Greg met Carol Buckman while serving aboard USS Nicholas, stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. They married on July 29, 1967, in New York State and their love story began. Their marriage lasted a scant 43 years, making their relationship and inspiration for their loved ones.

After serving the Navy with enthusiasm for 20 years, he retired from the service and worked in the private sector for several years at GA Technologies (1983-1989) and SAIC (1989-2001) in La Jolla. For the past 10 years, after a second retirement, his main passion and hobby was the Maritime Museum of San Diego. He volunteered as a docent and was also an accomplished crew member. He died doing what he loved. Commander Gushaw was a lector at North Island Catholic Church which was a true labor of love. He enjoyed traveling with his dear wife, Carol, spending time with his children and grandchildren, and driving his MG (with the top down of course).

He is survived by his wife, Carol, of 43 years; his brother, Bradford Gushaw; his daughters, Eve (Tad) Dike, and Paige (Cameron) Webb; four grandchildren, Carson, Riley, Lauren and Molly.

He will be missed by his family, countless friends, coworkers and crew members.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Thursday, July 29, 2010, at Sacred Heart Church in Coronado, Calif.

Donations may be made to the Saint Vincent dePaul Society and The San Diego Maritime Museum.

Letter To The Editor
Vote Forsythe, September 14th

Editor:
Jim Forsythe is running for the Republican nomination for the State Senate in District #4 because he cares deeply about what is happening in Concord and wants to restore a sense of fiscal responsibility and respect for individual rights to our state government.

Jim is a passionate, knowledgeable and hard working leader. He is recognized as a candidate who would bring youth and new ideas to the senate.

As an engineer, he has the background and experience to understand complex issues such as energy.

As a father of two school aged children he understands the need for our children to receive a quality education.

As an activist for personal freedoms, Jim understands how new regulations and taxes have contributed to difficulties for our small businesses.

As a veteran, he understands service to our country and the sacrifices people make every day to insure our freedoms.

In the past several months, Jim has made a sincere effort to meet as many people in the district as possible, to listen to their concerns and assure them that our state can take a new direction. This is a very important election, as we need a new generation of leaders. However, Jim needs your support in order to make that happen.

As an undeclared voter, I would encourage my fellow independents to join with District #4 Republicans to vote for Jim Forsythe in the September 14th primary.

Barnstead-Alton GOP to Host US Senate Candidates Forum

Tuesday, August 17

The Barnstead-Alton Republican Committee (BARC) is pleased to announce the 3rd in a series of special events. At their August 17, 2010 meeting, BARC is sponsoring a US Senate Meet the (Republican) Candidates Forum. The Republican candidates for US Senate will be attending this event; they are seeking the opportunity to go head-to-head against Paul Hodes (the likely Democrat contender) for the US Senate seat being vacated by retiring US Senator Judd Gregg. Before one of these candidates can face Hodes, they must face each other in the September 14th Republican Primary to determine who will be Hodes’ challenger. So, if you’re not sure which US Senate candidate you should vote for in the primary, here’s your opportunity to hear from them at one event.

This event will be held at J.J. Goodwin’s Restaurant, 769 Suncook Valley Highway (Rt. 28), Center Barnstead, NH, on Tuesday, August 17, at 6 p.m. (a 1/2 hour earlier than the normal start time for BARC meetings) or feel free to arrive at 5 p.m. for dinner (at your option). All interested Republicans and Unaffiliated/Independents are invited to attend. For more information, go to the BARC web site at www.BARC-NewHampshire.com or send an email to [email protected], or call (603) 364-9780.
