Letter

In light of the recent Healthcare reform bill, it concerns me as a Registered Nurse that our government and country as a whole is not putting more effort and money into preventive health measures. This will save citizens and taxpayers money and decrease insurance rates.

During the outbreak of H1N1, the government had a good opportunity to use public health initiatives to educate citizens. The primary defenses against any flu should be good hand washing, good nutrition and physical activity to keep our bodies healthy and able to fight off infection. Instead, they emphasize vaccines as the first line of defense. In the immune-compromised and the elderly, they have their place. As many people had difficulties with the flu they went to the Emergency Room which overburdened many ER’s because they had no insurance or primary care services.

With health care costs at an all time high, the government should be promoting preventive care. Citizens should see their primary care physicians or Nurse Practitioner and have access to nutrition programs and physical activity initiatives instead of having no care and going to the ER when they are sick or their chronic disease management is out of control. Prevention is more cost effective than hospital treatment thus keeping insurance rates down and providing more people with coverage.
