Word of Life Philippines
Submitted By Judy Gower

What’s on your bucket list?  Who would have thought that someone like me, Judy Gower, would ever get to travel around the world?  In my wildest imagination, I would never have dreamed that I would be so privileged to have this opportunity.

We are gearing up for a long flight to Laguna Philippines.  Brian and I are excited once again to be able to spend time with and teach  these dear Filipino youth, as well as, students from 10+ different countries.  The flight time for us is 28 hours and the teaching schedule is for 2 weeks.  Word of Life Philippines holds a very special place in our hearts, as we have been honored to be involved in the lives of these youth for a number of years.

This unique ministry is high energy and very creative.  They have the regular routine of daily Bible school, and then add 6oo or more people to their schedule for a conference for business people/ young adults at the same time and things can really get busy.  Brian will be teaching at the Bible school and also speaking during the weekend conference that will be sponsored by Word of Life Philippines.  http://www.wolphilippines.org/

I am always amazed and intrigued by the ingenuity of these people.  Although a third world country, the Filipino people are a happy, joyful and giving people.  They are always trying to “give” something to us to show their appreciation for our coming to be with them.  I sometimes think “if they only knew how blessed I am in my beautiful country...”  I truly think that they would give me the shirt off their back, if I  needed it.  I always come back with a fresh perspective of how fortunate I am.

We  keep a very busy schedule while we are there but end up being refreshed by a new perspective on ministry and how fun it is to be involved in global missions and realize how all people are really alike in the world.  They have struggles, family problems, lack of finances, fears and problems just like we do.  It is such a joy to be able to share Jesus with these dear people.  Truth is universal.  Jesus came into the world to “testify to truth” John 17.

We will be teaching in their new class room complex this year.  Two years ago we watched as workers were constructing this massive building.  Construction is slow and all manual....the men mix the cement in a pile and then form a bucket brigade to get it to its assigned destination.  Everything in the way of construction is done manually and materials are hard to find, so consequently it takes much longer then usual to build most everything.

So while you all are enjoying this beautiful fall weather, we will be ‘melting’ in the humid tropical heat...and eating rice, rice, rice, and some fish and also some strange looking veggies (to us anyway) and fruit. Brian is hoping not to have to eat a ‘balute’ ...a rare delicacy for the region...a form of unhatched duck egg....feathers, feet and a high gag factor.  Stay tuned, and perhaps I can give you an update when we return!!

Barnstead Fire Rescue Changes Color to Red!

Barnstead Fire rescue has long been known for their unique green fire trucks.   On Friday if you visit with Barnstead Fire Rescue you will see red!  On Fridays on duty firefighters will begin participating in a national awareness campaign known as “Red Shirt Friday”.  Red Shirt Friday” is part of a nationwide effort to show support and solidarity with our men and women serving in our military.

Our troops are asked to put themselves in harm’s way to protect freedom.  By wearing red on Fridays we are letting our service men and women know we support their sacrifice and will not forget them.   For more information on “Red Shirt Friday” and find other ways you can support our troops you can go to www.redshirtfridays.org.
