Prospect Mountain Hockey Team

PMHS Hockey Team

The Prospect Mountain Hockey Team sporting their new 2009 Jerseys finally avoided a snow storm and started play at 9:00 at Pop Whalen Arena in Wolfeboro.

Kameron Hutchings was welcomed back on the ice as both he and Alumni Phil Daniels were strong on defense in the corners. Missing in action were a couple of adult/alumni players so to get the game going students, Meusse, and Roberts switched sides.

Goals for the students were scored by Mike LeRoy 4, Ryan Sargent 3, Tom Faucher 1 and on the adult side goals were added by Jeremy Kim 4, Vinnie Meusse 1, Kyle 1, Phil Daniels 1, and Geoff Roberts 1. Out of time on the clock, the game ended in a 8 - 8 tie.

Look for an upcoming fundraiser for the PMHS hockey club, join us and get to know the players both students and alumni as the energy of the club continues to grow.

Any alumni/adults wishing to order a white custom jersey can do so by contacting Robin LeRoy at [email protected] jerseys are $16. Any students joining late in the season may order their jerseys for $10, with the difference being donated by the LeRoy family.

Barnstead Parks and Rec Ice Committee

The Barnstead Parks and Recreation has welcomed a new ice committee. Joining late in the season, the initial ice was laid by mother nature. Mathew LeRoy, as well as family and members of the Prospect Mountain Hockey Club, have been doing their best to both sweep and spray the surface. Hours will be posted soon. It is very important that all hours and signs be obeyed. If the rink says “closed” it is closed. This could be due to ice maintenance (it takes a while for the spray to set up) or it could be due to a storm where the chance to sweep has not yet taken place. The ice is for all to enjoy, both for open skate and for hockey. With that said, volunteers are needed to help with the sweeping. If you or your family are interested in helping, please contact Robin LeRoy at [email protected] . Together the Town of Barnstead Parks and Recreation can bring a new activity to the town. Look for an upcoming family night and join us for a bonfire, hotdogs, and of course skating.

Barnstead Cub Scout Pack 43 Webelos

Barnstead Cub Scout Pack 43 Webelos are working hard to earn their citizenship award pin. This entails learning what it takes for an immigrant to become an American Citizen and also learning how they can be better citizens themselves and discovering ways that they can make their own community a better place. Part of this award is to write a letter to the newspaper and share their concerns in our local community. Here are some of their thoughts.

At school they should have a shooting range and archery. It teaches you math and you have to know angles and distance. If a child finds a gun they wouldn’t accidentally shoot themselves if they know about gun safety. -Derek Gagnon

My name is Roy. It is winter. We should have a ski slope. –Roy Pietrek

My name is Tyler. My concern is that we need a longer summer. I like to sleep in longer. –Tyler Beaudet

My name is Zac. I live in Locke Lake. I am concerned about the people on the road. When I am at my bus stop people zoom by. I think there should be more signs to slow down. –Zac Hennesey

Hi my name is Adam. I think we should have a longer summer vacation and I think we should have no homework. We should have a water park because we have to have more fun things to do for the kids. We should also have better food at school. –Adam Benenate

Hi my name is Devin and I am 9. I think that we should build a skate park. Because I only have a little space to skate at my Grandma’s. Plus I like to skate on skateboards. Another thing is that on Fridays at school we should do something fun like bowling, snowboarding, and skiing. –Devin Wittenberg

Hi my name is Joshua and my concern is every school should let kids try to do a good book project and if they do a good one they get 1 week out of school, so that kids learn to work for a reward when they grow up. -Joshua Noble

My name is Jacob. My concern is that there is too much school. And that we should have more stores and businesses. We should have a skate park. My other concern is that we should be able to do anything on Fridays at school during the winter. –Jacob Beaudet

My name is Jaimie and my concern is that I think they should add a 2nd floor on to the school. I also think no more people should move in to Barnstead because the school is full. One more concern is I think there should be more field trips. –Jaimie Westlake

Hi my name is Anthony. I am concerned that children should have more to do in Locke Lake. Some ideas could be a new tennis court and clean out the lake so you can swim in it. Children would not get in so much trouble if they had something to do. –Anthony Chioccola

My name is Chase. The date is 2/4/09. I’m worried about the environment. We need to learn survival skills at school. So when the power goes out we know better what to do. -Chase Plante

4-H Youth Qualify for National Awards

UNH Cooperative Extension, 4-H Youth Development held its 2009 resume review, and state and national award interviews on January 17, 2009 at the Belmont High school in Belmont, NH. 26 of NH’s top 4-H youth from 6 counties gathered to interview for the opportunity to attend one of three national trips sponsored by the 4-H Foundation of NH; National 4-H Congress held in Atlanta, Georgia; National 4-H Conference held in Washington DC; and National 4-H Dairy Conference, held in Madison, Wisconsin. The New Hampshire delegates, age 15-18, will meet with youth from all over the country to tackle issues of importance, participate in educational workshops, community service and cultural tours and gain inspiration from the outstanding national speakers the conferences offer. The conferences also allow them a venue to debate issues, network with peers from around the country, and practice leadership. Selected candidates will also receive a State Achievement Award, acknowledging achievement in leadership, community service and personal development through the 4-H program

The applicants from Merrimack County were: Carlyn Reep and Jocelyn Tanner. These outstanding youth have been active in their county 4-H programs, and after writing a resume have been recommended by the county for participation at the national level. The participating youth tell us that the resume process is difficult; however, they are pleased that they now have a resume they can build on and use for other opportunities. They are also excited at the prospect of winning a national trip and report that the interview wasn’t as “scary” as they thought it would be!

The judging panels consisted of teams of adult volunteers as well as youth who had previously attended the national conferences. All of the judges were duly impressed with the achievements of all the outstanding youth who submitted resumes. Many of the applicants were brave enough to submit to more than one interview as they were applying for multiple awards. It was a difficult decision for the judges; however, they determined that the national delegates will be as follows:

National 4-H Congress: Christopher Humber, Hillsborough County; Jackie Janigian, Rockingham County; Grace Magnusson, Rockingham County; Alexandra Patch, Grafton County; and Lillian Zimmerman, Hillsborough County. Alternates: Ashley Chase, Cheshire County; and Jamie Wojtkiewicz, Hillsborough County.

National 4-H Conference: Ashley Chase, Cheshire County; Christopher Humber, Hillsborough County; Grace Magnusson, Rockingham County. Alternates: Kourtne Flanders, Cheshire County; Joslin Goss, Grafton County; Jackie Janigian, Rockingham County.

National 4-H Dairy Conference: Suzanne Chickering, Cheshire County; Kourtne Flanders, Cheshire County; Laura Thompson, Cheshire County.

State Achievement Awards will go to: Peter Attisano, Strafford County; Mark Chase-Cook, Hillsborough County; Ethan Craggy, Hillsborough County; Kourtne Flanders, Cheshire County; Allison Fortin, Hillsborough County; Joslin Goss, Grafton County; Connor Humber, Hillsborough County; Mackenzie Pratt, Hillsborough County; Carlyn Reep, Merrimack County; Brianna Stoyle, Hillsborough County; Jocelyn Tanner, Merrimack County; Paige Tuttle, Hillsborough County; Ashley Winslow, Hillsborough County; Jamie Wojtkiewicz, Hillsborough County.
