Barnstead Old Home Day - Going Once, Going Twice…

One of the very popular activities at Barnstead Old Home Day is the Country Auction. We are, again, privileged to have George Twigg, renowned New Hampshire auctioneer of Gilmanton, as our auctioneer for this year's Old Home Day auction. The auction will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. in the Auction Tent; chairs are provided.

Gina Ruggieri of Barnstead models this year's Barnstead Old Home Day baseball cap and T-shirt showing this year's theme, Old Time Country Fair. Old Home Day merchandise is available at Barnstead Town Hall and at each Saturday night Summer Band Concert at Barnstead Parade.

Previous auctions have featured many great items donated by local businesses, individuals and families. Auction items have included fuel oil, firewood, loam, overnight stays at hotels, septic pumping, vehicle services, art work, jewelry, pillows, pet food, CDs by local artists, specialty gift baskets, internet service, pizza, quality craft items, collectibles and MUCH, MUCH MORE! It is, indeed, an interesting and diverse collection of items for auction.

Join us at the Old Home Day Auction on Saturday, August 23, 2008. Bid and walk away with a good buy and a good feeling that you have helped to support local businesses and Barnstead Old Home Day for another year. This is a great way for your business to advertise and get community recognition.

To donate an item or for more information, call Eileen at 435-6692 or, go to http://www.barnstead.org/aboutbarnstead/ohdtext.html for an auction donor form. See you at the auction!

Camp Good News

Since 1962, Camp Good News® has provided a Christian camping ministry to thousands of boys and girls. Camp Good News is located in Charlestown, New Hampshire, on over 240 acres of land. The spectacular New England woods provide a great setting to focus on God and to minister to one another. As a ministry of Child Evangelism Fellowship® of NH, the purpose of Camp Good News is to evangelize and disciple children in the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and to establish them in the Word of God and in a local church for Christian living.

Camp Good News offers a variety of ministry opportunities for young and old alike. The main camp offers a traditional camping experience. For the adventurous types, they have a wilderness adventure camp. There are also specialty camps such as soccer and horseback riding. Each summer, Camp Good News opens for weeks of heart-warming fellowship, dynamic Bible training and loads of fantastic fun.

This week several families from the Center Barnstead Christian Church are volunteering their time and abilities at Camp Good News. We will be helping out with work in the kitchen, nursing duties, helping kids with crafts, childcare, housekeeping and any other needs that arise. For more information about Camp Good News, visit their website at http://www.campgoodnewsnh.com or call the Center Barnstead Christian Church at 269-8831.

Barnstead Summer Concert

The Summer Concerts continue this Saturday, July 26th from 6-8pm at the Barnstead Parade Grounds with the sounds of "Outlawed" playing Country music.

What can be said about the group "Outlawed"? To sum it up, "Good Country music to enjoy by great talented artists". If you've never heard of "Outlawed" they used to perform as Almost Cowboyz. Come join us as we welcome "Outlawed" back to Barnstead to enjoy some good country music.

This concert is FREE and open to the public; no alcohol is allowed.

See you there!!

Letter

As we unite to manage our colony, the Board of Directors and the Administrator are accountable to the colony members for spending our monies in a show of faith. Some members of the present Board have over ruled the votes of the membership by approving a 4% raise to the Administrator, which also incurred 4% raises to all other employees. This increased cost to the members at a time when all companies are cutting back. The new line item budget shows a 7% increase for the Administrator and other full time employees would receive 6%. When is the last time in this economy have you received these high raises? How is this Board fiscally prudent???

New dock and repairs $9000.00 for 300', for 15 boats at average. How does this serve the majority of members??? No overtime for maintenance. How will members be able to get to work? Lake treatment is only $8000.00. If no lake what happens to property values? We all want the best for our community.

June Board meeting informed us of a deficit. Instead of curtailing spending, the Administrator spent $800.00 to hot top a very small portion of the parking lot, Is this showing restraint of spending??

Letter

During the past few weeks you have seen many letters concerning the Locke Lake Colony's Annual Meeting. Since our first letter requesting a line item budget, we have received 2 line item budgets neither of which is acceptable. Until we receive a workable budget, we cannot accept $600.00 a year. We have seen nothing accomplished to benefit the members to justify raising the amount to $600.00. Money has been spent frivolously. Example: 4% raises for all full time employees was not approved by the membership at our last annual meeting. The members approved 3%. With water, heating bills and gas prices sky rocketing, can we afford this? I do not find it acceptable to sell passes to the public for use of any amenities. I believe the lake could not handle all the traffic this would bring. This is a small man-made lake. The damage from the boats and vehicles on the lake now to the lake front properties is not good. This is not fair to the owners. I would like to keep this lake private.

We need your support to reject this budget and make the Board accountable for its expenditures and give us an honest, livable budget that all the members can accept

Peggy Gingras, Center Barnstead, N.H.,

Letter To The Editor

I would like to thank the Locke Lake Colony By-Law Committee. I also agree with Chairperson, Peggy Gingras. There is a miscommunication between the board and the by-law committee. The by-law committee voted yes to lower the number of directors from 9 to 7. The committee also voted yes to lower the quorum from 25% to 10% based on recommendations from Attorney Arthur Hoover. All owners received the changes in writing in which you must decide, do you want to start changing the by-laws of the association that were written in the 60s and 70s? If you vote yes, this will be the first step forward. Without this step the rest of the changes that the by-law committee worked so hard on may not see the light of day. If we do lower the quorum, the by-law committee will be asked to review and vote on all its work one more time as will the Board of Directors. As I stated in my annual letter, this is very important and requires a second meeting. It is time, after 40 years, to modernize your association and its by-laws. Please vote on both issues and please attend this year's annual meeting. The Board of Directors does not want to vote for you, we want your to vote for yourselves.

Member of Locke Lake Colony

Letter

As of 7/14 there have been 2 different contradictory budgets. We would advise people to scan every line item carefully. I would like to know why there were so many certified letters with the threat of liens sent out before July 15th. What is more important to Locke Lake Colony? The dams, repairs to the lodge, the maintenance upkeep of our amenities or is it as our administrator's concern, more DOCKS needed. Be aware of the definition of assessments. Annual assessments are $15.00 due in May. Special assessments are voted on at the annual meeting. (Last year $325.00) Special Projects are $55.44 and will end in 2009.

Where will the increase go? We have never had a deficit in the history of Locke Lake Association. Now we were told at the last June monthly meeting that we have a deficit of $32000. WHY? Could this be the reason for upping the assessment to $600.00 ? Could this be a scare tactic ? Let's stop blaming the past administrators and Board of Directors and take a good look at what has happened this past year with the present administrator and Board of Directors. This year they are asking for an increase from $395.44 to

$600.00. Let's make this Board accountable.

Thank you for your interest and we hope to see you at the meeting. This meeting is extremely important.

Letter To The Editor

Locke Lake members please keep an open-mind and come to the annual meeting to hear the facts! Don't be swayed by privately held meetings without staff or current directors present, negative flyers, and published ramblings from members basing information on feelings instead of facts.

With that said, I do wish to address one topic right now, the By-Law Committee met every week since the last annual meeting. This group did an exceptional job in reviewing each section of the By-Laws; they presented their changes to the Board of Directors who made the decision to send the changes to the attorney. Our attorney strongly suggested we reduce the quorum needed to hold meetings first and make certain we streamline the requirements for conducting business. That is all you are voting on right now.

These committee members worked hard for nearly a year and are not finished yet. Once we get through this meeting, if the proposed amendments are adopted, the attorney will then concentrate his time on the changes the committee presented. All of these changes are forty years overdue; please don't let this Committee down/

I will reiterate what was started in a recent letter, this is one of the most important meetings you will attend! Please come, you will make a difference. In closing, I want to caution you about giving your proxy, your voice, your future to members you do not know well. Call the office; ask to be set up with members who will represent your needs no matter what they may be.

Sincerely,

Deana Cowan

Administrator
